What kind of screen damage do you actually have?

“Broken screen” covers four different problems, and they are not equally serious. Cracked glass only means the outer layer is damaged but the display underneath still lights up evenly and touch works everywhere — the most straightforward case. Display failure shows as black patches, coloured lines, a bright white screen or bleeding blotches, which means the panel itself is damaged, not just the glass. Touch problems appear as dead zones where taps do nothing, or “ghost touch”, where the phone registers presses you never made. And an intact-looking screen on a phone that will not turn on is usually not a screen problem at all.

That last case matters, because replacing a screen will not fix a fault that lives on the logic board. This is exactly what the free diagnostic is for: we check before anything is ordered or opened, so you are not paying for a part that was never the problem. Not every iPhone screen is built the same

Older models such as the iPhone 8, XR and SE use LCD panels. From the iPhone X onward, most models use OLED — Apple markets these as Super Retina and Super Retina XDR. The difference is practical, not marketing: OLED assemblies are more fragile, more expensive to produce, and far less tolerant of a bent frame. It is why a drop that only spiders the glass on an older iPhone can knock out the display entirely on a newer one.

We work with both original and premium aftermarket assemblies, and we will tell you which one your repair uses before we begin. There is no single right answer — an older device kept as a backup phone and a two-month-old Pro do not call for the same decision, and it is your call to make with the facts in front of you.

Face ID, True Tone and the “Unknown Part” message

Three things confuse people after a screen replacement, so it is worth knowing them in advance.

Face ID depends on the front sensor array, which is paired to your specific device at the factory. It cannot be replaced with a new one and keep working — but it can be carefully transferred from your old screen to the new one. Done properly, Face ID keeps functioning. This transfer is delicate work, and it is a large part of what separates a careful repair from a fast one.

True Tone, the feature that warms the display to match room lighting, is tied to data stored in the original panel. On many repairs it can be carried across; on some it cannot. We will tell you which applies to your model rather than let you discover it afterwards.

The “Unknown Part” or non-genuine display notice appears in Settings on recent iPhones whenever a display is not serialised to that device by Apple. It is a parts-pairing notice, not a fault, and it does not stop the screen from working. We mention it up front because seeing it unannounced is unsettling.

Before you bring your iPhone in

Back up to iCloud or a computer if the screen still responds enough to allow it. Know your Apple ID password — after certain repairs the device asks for it, and we cannot bypass that. If the screen is completely unresponsive and you cannot back up, tell us: recovering data from a device that will not display is a different job, and our data recovery service handles it.

If glass is flaking away from the panel, tape it lightly before travelling. It keeps the fragments together and, more to the point, keeps them out of your fingers.
