• an iOS notice recommending battery service — Apple notes this message doesn’t indicate a safety issue;
• sudden shutdowns at 20 or 30%, especially in winter;
• a less responsive phone: iOS can limit performance peaks to avoid a shutdown;
• a lifting screen or bulging back: a swollen battery, have it checked right away.

The iPhone XR battery at a glance

Released in 2018, the XR charges through its Lightning port or on a Qi pad; it doesn’t have the MagSafe magnets of newer models. Its battery is designed to retain 80% of its original capacity after 500 complete cycles, and iOS doesn’t show the cycle count in Settings.
