Cycles and battery health: what your iPhone 15 shows you

The iPhone 15 tells you more about its battery than earlier generations: in Settings › Battery › Battery Health, you see Maximum Capacity, but also the date of first use and the cycle count. According to Apple, its battery is designed to retain 80% of its original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions — twice the 500 cycles stated for iPhone 14 and earlier.

A new battery is due when:

• Maximum Capacity nears 80% or iOS reports significantly degraded battery health;
• the phone shuts down at 20 or 30%, especially outdoors in winter;
• it feels less responsive, as iOS reins in performance peaks to avoid a shutdown;
• battery life drops with no change in your habits;
• the screen lifts or the back bulges: swollen battery, stop charging the phone.

“Used”, “Unknown” or “Genuine”: what iOS will display

The iPhone 15 is the first generation on which Apple allows a genuine battery from another iPhone of the same model to be reused. With iOS 18 or later, such a battery shows as “Used” next to Battery in Settings › General › About once the repair is completed with Repair Assistant; Apple notes that a reused battery might not perform as well as a new genuine one.

An original Apple battery installed using Apple’s own repair process is marked “Genuine”. Conversely, “Unknown” flags a battery that isn’t genuine, isn’t working properly, has been modified or hasn’t been verified and linked to the iPhone; its health data may then be inaccurate. These messages don’t stop you from using the phone, but an unknown part can lower its trade-in value: we tell you in advance what your option will show.

Charging an iPhone 15 to go easy on the new battery

On iPhone 15 and later, Apple lets you choose a charge limit between 80% and 100%, in 5% increments, in Settings › Battery › Charging; at 100%, Optimized Battery Charging remains available.
