Signs of a worn laptop battery

A lithium-ion battery loses capacity with every charge cycle. After a few years, the laptop that used to last a full day of classes or work only manages an hour or two. The most common signs:

• battery life dropping fast, even without heavy software;
• the laptop shutting off suddenly at 15 or 20%;
• Windows showing “Plugged in, not charging” or a battery warning;
• the computer only starting when plugged into the adapter;
• a lifting trackpad, a bulging keyboard or a case that no longer closes properly: a swollen battery. Unplug it, stop using it and bring it in.

Check your battery wear yourself

On Windows, open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport: the report compares the original capacity (“Design capacity”) with the current one (“Full charge capacity”). A big gap confirms the wear. Several manufacturers also offer their own diagnostic tool.
