What macOS tells you about your battery

Open System Settings › Battery, then the info button next to “Battery Health”. macOS shows the condition (“Normal” or “Service Recommended”) and, on Apple silicon Macs, the maximum capacity compared with a new battery. The cycle count is in System Information › Power. According to Apple, the battery in most recent MacBooks is designed to retain 80% of its original capacity up to 1,000 cycles.

Signs that justify a replacement:

• “Service Recommended” shown in Settings;
• battery life no longer lasting half a day;
• the MacBook shutting off before 0% or only starting when plugged in;
• a trackpad that clicks poorly, a case that no longer closes flat or a bulging bottom: a swollen battery. Stop using it and bring it in.
