Why a MacBook Pro battery wears out

The MacBook Pro is often a work tool: video editing, development, music, long days connected to an external display. These uses run the machine hot and rack up cycles faster than light use.

On 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro models (2016 to 2020) and older Intel models, a swelling battery can push out the bottom case and interfere with the trackpad. Signs to watch for

System Settings › Battery › Battery Health shows the condition and, on Apple silicon, the maximum capacity. According to Apple, the battery is designed to retain 80% of its original capacity up to 1,000 cycles. Past that, or if you see one of these signs, have it checked:

• “Service Recommended” in Settings;
• battery life cut in half compared with when it was new;
• sudden shutdowns despite the percentage shown;
• a bulging bottom case or a trackpad that’s hard to click: a swollen battery, to replace right away.
