Which MacBook Pro do you have? Find your exact model
Open the Apple menu › About This Mac and copy the line shown, for example “MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5)”, into the quote form. Mac won’t start? The model number printed on the bottom case is enough, for example A1706 (13-inch, 2016–2017) or A2442 (14-inch, 2021). Older than 2016? Tell us anyway: we’ll let you know whether the repair is possible.
Repair by MacBook Pro generation
MacBook Pro M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max (2025–2026)
The 14-inch M5 (2025) and the 14- and 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max (2026) are the newest. Under Apple’s warranty or AppleCare+? Check with Apple first: AppleCare+ also covers accidental damage (screen, liquid) for a fee. Otherwise, call before you drop by: we’ll confirm the part for your exact configuration, then the price before the repair.
MacBook Pro M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max (2024)
The 2024 14- and 16-inch models introduced the nano-texture display option: if yours has that matte finish, say so in the form, because the replacement screen needs the same treatment. Like every 14- and 16-inch model since 2021, they charge through MagSafe 3 or USB-C.
MacBook Pro M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max (2023)
Launched in November 2023. The base 14-inch M3 has two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports; the M3 Pro and M3 Max have three. After two or three years of daily use, the battery is often the first thing to fade.
MacBook Pro M1 and M2 (2020–2023)
The 13-inch M1 (2020) and M2 (2022) still have the Touch Bar and charge only through their two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports: if one port fails, only one is left. The 2021 14- and 16-inch models (M1 Pro and M1 Max) introduced the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display and the return of MagSafe 3, both kept in 2023 on the M2 Pro and M2 Max.
Intel MacBook Pro (2016–2020)
The 2016 to 2019 13- and 15-inch models have the “butterfly” keyboard, known for keys that stick, repeat or stop responding; the 2019 16-inch and the 2020 13-inch have a scissor keyboard. On some models, a worn display flex cable can cause a “stage light” effect along the bottom of the screen, or a screen that goes dark past a certain angle.
The most common MacBook Pro repairs
Cracked screen, lines, spots or black screen
Lid closed on an earbud, coloured lines, bright spots or a black picture while the Mac starts up: it’s usually the screen or its cable. Since the glass and the panel are fused, the full display is usually replaced. Details: MacBook screen repair in Montreal.
Battery draining fast, “Service Recommended” or swollen battery
In System Settings › Battery, macOS shows “Normal” or “Service Recommended”. Apple designs these batteries to retain up to 80% of their capacity at 1,000 cycles (count in System Information › Power). Trackpad lifting or case bulging? The battery is swelling: stop using the Mac and bring it in right away.
Keyboard, keys and trackpad
Butterfly keys that stick or double letters, a key that came off, a keyboard that took a coffee, a dead Touch Bar: everything is assessed at the free diagnostic. A trackpad that no longer clicks is sometimes the first sign of a swollen battery pushing up from below: have it checked quickly.
Not charging: USB-C, Thunderbolt or MagSafe port
First try another cable, another adapter and another port: on the 14- and 16-inch models, MagSafe 3 and every Thunderbolt port charge the Mac. Only one port refuses? It’s probably that one. Nothing charges? The battery or the logic board’s charging circuit may be at fault.
Liquid damage and logic board: on-site micro-soldering
Coffee or water on the keyboard: unplug the charger, shut the Mac down (hold the power button), don’t turn it back on and bring it in fast, no rice, no hair dryer: liquid corrodes the logic board until it’s cleaned. We clean the board and replace affected components under the microscope, on site: see micro-soldering in Montreal.
MacBook Pro won’t turn on
Black screen, a flashing question mark, restart loops: the free diagnostic separates the screen, the software and the logic board. On a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip, damaged firmware can sometimes be revived from another Mac with Apple Configurator; otherwise, we repair the board at the component level.
Data recovery: soldered, encrypted SSD
Since 2018 (T2 chip) and on every MacBook Pro with Apple silicon, the SSD is soldered to the logic board and encrypted: the drive can’t be pulled and read elsewhere. Getting your files back means bringing the board back to a working state, which on-site micro-soldering often makes possible. No recovery, no charge: see data recovery in Montreal.
Slowness, viruses and macOS reinstall
A very slow Mac, ads opening on their own, unknown extensions: we remove the malware and, if needed, reinstall macOS. Make a Time Machine backup before coming in if the Mac still starts. Done at the counter, not remotely.
Is it worth repairing a MacBook Pro?
For a MacBook Pro with Apple silicon, almost always: all of them are compatible with macOS 27 Golden Gate, the current version, and a new battery, port or screen costs a fraction of a new laptop. For an Intel model, macOS Tahoe 26 is the last possible version, and only the 2019 16-inch and the 2020 13-inch with four Thunderbolt 3 ports got it.
