Which MacBook Air do you have? Find your exact model
Under the Apple menu › About This Mac, copy the full line, size included, for example “MacBook Air (15-inch, M3, 2024)”. Screen dead? The model number is printed on the bottom case: A1932 (Retina 2018–2019), A2337 (M1) or A2681 (M2, 13-inch). A 2017 or older Air? Tell us anyway: we’ll let you know whether the repair is possible.
Repair by MacBook Air generation
MacBook Air M5 (2026)
The 13- and 15-inch M5 models came out in 2026, with MagSafe 3 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare+? Ask Apple first: AppleCare+ also covers accidental damage (screen, liquid) for a fee. Otherwise, phone us before coming in so we can check the part for your model, then we confirm the price before the repair.
MacBook Air M4 (2025)
Available in 13 and 15 inches, like the M3: specify the size, because the screen, battery and case aren’t interchangeable. At this age, typical damage is accidental: a screen cracked after closing on an object, liquid on the keyboard, a corner dented in a fall.
MacBook Air M3 (2024)
Like every Air since the M1, it has no fan: it slows down when it gets hot. An M3 Air that runs hot at rest or has turned very slow may have a software problem (a runaway process) or a hardware one: the free diagnostic settles it.
MacBook Air M2 (2022–2023)
The M2 introduced today’s flat design: a 13.6-inch screen with a notch and the return of MagSafe 3, then a 15-inch version in 2023. After three or four years, the battery is often the part to replace.
MacBook Air M1 (2020)
The first Air with Apple silicon keeps the wedge design and charges only through its two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports: one damaged port leaves you a single socket for everything. Compatible with macOS 27 Golden Gate, the current version, it gets its battery life back with a new battery.
Intel Retina MacBook Air (2018–2020)
The 2018 and 2019 models have the “butterfly” keyboard (keys that stick or repeat); the 2020 model has a scissor keyboard. All have Touch ID and the T2 chip. No Intel MacBook Air got macOS Tahoe 26, let alone macOS 27: we compare the repair price with what the laptop is worth before we start.
The most common MacBook Air repairs
Cracked screen, lines or no picture
An earbud left on the keyboard when you close the lid, and the screen cracks. Lines, black areas or no picture while the Mac is running: the screen is replaced, as a single unit with its glass. In the meantime, an external display lets you get your files off. Details: MacBook screen repair in Montreal.
Battery: battery life melting away or “Service Recommended”
Open System Settings › Battery: “Service Recommended” means the battery holds noticeably less charge than when new, or isn’t working normally. Apple says the battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 cycles. A case that lifts or a trackpad that’s hard to click? The battery may be swollen: stop using and charging the Air, and have it checked quickly.
Keyboard and trackpad
Temperamental butterfly keys on 2018 and 2019 models, a key that came off, a sticky keyboard after a spill, a trackpad that no longer clicks: we assess the keyboard and trackpad at the free diagnostic, and you get the price before any work starts.
Not charging: USB-C or MagSafe port
M2 and newer Airs charge through MagSafe 3 or USB-C; the M1 and the Intel Retina Airs, through USB-C only. Try another cable, another adapter and the other port before concluding.
Spill on your Air: cleaning and micro-soldering
An Air’s keyboard sits right above the logic board. After a spill: unplug the charger, shut the Air down (hold the power button), don’t try to turn it back on and bring it in quickly, no rice. We open it, clean it and, on site, replace damaged components under the microscope: see our micro-soldering in Montreal page.
MacBook Air won’t turn on
An Air that dies as soon as it’s unplugged, a flashing folder with a question mark, or a screen that stays black: the free diagnostic separates a dead battery, a software problem or a logic-board fault, which we repair at the component level.
Data recovery: storage soldered to the logic board
On Airs with Apple silicon and Intel models with the T2 chip (since 2018), storage is part of the logic board and encrypted: no external enclosure can read it. Recovery goes through bringing the board back to working order, with micro-soldering, right here in the shop. No recovery, no charge. Details: data recovery in Montreal.
Slowness, viruses and macOS reinstall
An Air that crawls, pop-up ads, extensions installed behind your back: we remove the malware and reinstall macOS if needed. Make a Time Machine backup first. No remote troubleshooting: bring the computer and its charger.
Is it worth repairing a MacBook Air?
For an Air with Apple silicon, almost always yes: from M1 to M5, all are compatible with macOS 27 Golden Gate, the current version, and a new battery or screen costs far less than a new laptop. For an Intel Air, which never got macOS Tahoe 26 or macOS 27, we give you the price before we start and tell you straight if the repair isn’t worth it.

MacBook Air repair: FAQ
How much does a MacBook Air repair cost in Montreal?
It all depends on the model, the screen size (13 or 15 inches) and the part. We give you an exact price for free before we touch the computer.
Do you repair the MacBook Air M5 and M4?
Yes. Since these models are recent, a call before your visit lets us check the part is available. Under Apple’s warranty or AppleCare+? Also check with Apple.
How long does a MacBook Air repair take?
Many common repairs are done the same day, depending on the model, parts availability and the damage found. Drop by without an appointment, 7 days a week, at 757 Beaubien St. E.
My MacBook Air won’t charge: is it the port or the battery?
Try another cable, another adapter and the other port. If nothing charges, the battery or the charging circuit may be at fault: the free diagnostic confirms it before any repair.
Can you recover data from a MacBook Air that won’t turn on?
We handle it on site: since Air storage from 2018 on is built into the logic board and encrypted, we first try to bring the board back to working order, often through micro-soldering. No recovery, no charge.
Is my MacBook Air repair under warranty?
Yes. Every repair at Sub Tech Repairs comes with a lifetime warranty, with a full device test before you leave.
