iPhone X, XS and XR: what to know before a repair
Released in 2017, the iPhone X was the first iPhone without a Home button, with Face ID and a Super Retina OLED display. Apple followed in 2018 with the XS and XS Max, also OLED with a stainless steel band, and with the more affordable iPhone XR, which has a Liquid Retina LCD display and an aluminum band.
All four have a glass back that allows wireless charging, a Lightning port and Face ID. They no longer get new versions of iOS, only security fixes: they stay on iOS 18 for the XR, XS and XS Max, and on iOS 16 for the iPhone X.
Identify your model: X, XS, XS Max or XR
The iPhone XR stands out with its single camera; the X, XS and XS Max have two, stacked vertically. The exact name appears in Settings › General › About.
iPhone XS Max repair
The biggest of the group: 6.5-inch OLED display, two cameras and a stainless steel band. It also has the most expensive screen of the series.

iPhone XS repair
5.8-inch OLED display, two cameras and stainless steel: from the outside, it looks almost exactly like the iPhone X.

iPhone XR repair
The most popular of the four: 6.1-inch LCD display, a single camera, an aluminum band and six colours at launch. Its LCD screen costs less to replace than an OLED one.

iPhone X repair
The 2017 pioneer: 5.8-inch OLED display, two vertical cameras and stainless steel, available in silver or space grey. Stuck at iOS 16, it still gets security fixes, such as iOS 16.7.16 in May 2026.

Common repairs on the iPhone X, XS and XR
Cracked screen, black blotches or ghost touch
Screen replacement from $39, plus tax, often in 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the model and parts in stock. On an OLED screen (X, XS, XS Max), a drop often leaves black spots or lines that spread over the following days. The sensors at the top of the screen, which Face ID depends on, are transferred carefully: if they’re intact, Face ID keeps working. Depending on the part, True Tone may stop working: we tell you beforehand. See iPhone screen repair.
Worn battery, phone slowing down
Battery replacement from $29, plus tax, often in 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the model and parts in stock. On these models, a tired battery can lead iOS to throttle performance to avoid unexpected shutdowns; a new battery gives the phone its normal speed back. A useful benchmark: at what percentage to replace the battery.
Lightning port: on-and-off charging
If the phone only charges with the cable held a certain way, the port is often the cause. We inspect and clean it first; if it’s really damaged, replacing it costs from $39, plus tax. A useful clue: if wireless charging works but the cable doesn’t, the port is suspect number one. More: phone not charging.
Cracked glass back
The glass back of the X, XS, XS Max and XR splits easily on concrete or ice. We replace the back glass on all four models and then check wireless charging; the price is known upfront. Details: iPhone back glass repair.
Blurry camera, weak sound or silent mic
From $29, plus tax, often in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the model and parts in stock. On the X, XS and XS Max, the second camera is a telephoto lens: if only 2x zoom gives blurry photos, that module is the first suspect.
iPhone X, XS or XR dropped in water
The iPhone X and XR are rated IP67 and the XS and XS Max IP68, but Apple points out that this resistance decreases over time. A wet phone shouldn’t be charged: turn it off and bring it in. We repair with micro-soldering, right on the logic board, and can attempt to recover your photos even if the screen stays black. See what to do after water damage and data recovery.
Parts and Service History: what your X, XS or XR can show
Since iOS 15.2, iPhone can keep a Parts and Service History in Settings › General › About. According to Apple, on the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max this tracking targets the battery: a non-genuine battery may appear there as “Unknown Part”, and so may a genuine battery that hasn’t been verified and linked to the iPhone through Apple’s process. Screen tracking only starts with the iPhone 11.
The screen on these four models isn’t subject to that message, but the choice of part still matters: OLED or LCD, colours, True Tone. You choose with all the facts.
Repairing an iPhone X, XS or XR in 2026: is it worth it?
For a battery or a screen, often yes, if the phone suits you as it is: the repair costs far less than a new device. But since these models no longer get new versions of iOS, a big repair is rarely justified if you plan to switch phones within a few months.
